• Pain, Our Protector Try to imagine a world without pain. At first glance it seems like utopia. In reality, without pain you can really hurt yourself. Pain is our body's protection against real damage! Dr. Brand has been actively invovled in treating leprosy for most of his life. He was the first to realize that the prime reason victims of leprosy become deformed, is due to the lack of pain. As wounds do not hurt, they are not treated, this leads to infection and often to gangrene.

• The Eye The first half hour explains the problems in designing the lens and cornea of the eye. These are the only parts of the body which are crystal clear. As such, they have to be fed, wastes have to be taken away, they have to be protected against disease and injury, without the benefit of a blood supply.   The second lecture describes the complexity of forming an optical image, converting it to a digital code, transmitting it to the brain, decoding the message and relating this virtual image into a meaningful picture and experience. It is little wonder that Charles Darwin admitted that the complexity of the human eye defied his theory of evolution.
